Luis Rafael Sánchez was a Puerto Rican playwright, novelist, and essayist. He was born on October 17, 1936, in Humacao, Puerto Rico, and died on August 1, 2019, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Sanchez is considered one of the most important figures in Puerto Rican literature and was known for his works that explored Puerto Rican society and culture. He studied at the University of Puerto Rico and later at New York University and Columbia University. Some of his most notable works include "La guaracha del Macho Camacho" (Macho Camacho's Beat), "La importancia de llamarse Daniel Santos" (The Importance of Being Called Daniel Santos), and "Yo el supremo" (I, the Supreme). Sanchez's work often challenged social norms and explored themes of identity, power, and cultural heritage. He was awarded numerous literary prizes during his career and his works continue to be studied and celebrated in Puerto Rico and beyond.
